Rev. Lisa Sykes’ 2012 UNEP Speech on Thimerosal

About Rev. Lisa Sykes’ 2012 UNEP Speech on Thimerosal

In 2012, Rev. Lisa Sykes addressed the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) during a global summit on mercury policy. As both a minister and a mother, she spoke powerfully about the hidden risks of Thimerosal — a mercury-based preservative still used in vaccines.

This speech was later removed from the internet, despite its deeply personal testimony and its alignment with global public health ethics. Now, with permission and purpose, it has been recovered and re-recorded to ensure the message is preserved.

Rev. Sykes speaks not only for her own son — but for every child whose safety depends on transparency, informed consent, and the removal of toxic substances from medicine.

While US Vaccine Mercury Removed, Harms Done Remain Unspoken

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

JULY 12, 2025

"When you take something toxic, and put it in something lifesaving, does that make the toxic thing safe, or the life-saving thing toxic? The answer seems so obvious, but I didn’t know there was toxic mercury in my son’s vaccines,” explains Rev. Lisa Sykes. She is referring to the mercury-based “preservative” called Thimerosal, invented in 1929.

On June 26, 2025, in a landmark decision, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended using only mercury-free vaccines in the United States. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., having replaced the previous members of ACIP, brought the issue of Thimerosal to a new panel appropriately concerned with cumulative toxic exposures.

Statistical studies, sponsored by pharmaceuticals, consistently find Thimerosal to be safe, but independent research affirms the warning on the Material Data Safety Sheet given to those who ship the substance: Thimerosal is a developmental toxin, a neurotoxin, a reproductive toxin and a carcinogen.  Any exposure, even to a “little bit,” is an emergency.

Exclaims Sykes, “I would get so mad when previous vaccine ‘experts’ with huge conflicts-of-interest would pretend Thimerosal is some kind of ‘magic mercury’ with a toxicity that miraculously disappears just because you place it in a vial.”

Sykes understands. Her son was exposed to Thimerosal both prenatally and in the first two years of life. By two-and-a-half years, he was diagnosed with autism; at the age of four, that diagnosis was superseded by another: mercury poisoning from the therapeutic use of vaccines. “The mercury in those shots disabled my son for life.”

Now, Sykes is urgently working to avoid an inauspicious occasion globally: the 100th Anniversary of injecting mercury into humans, 1929-2029.  “A hundred years of poisoning the population, especially pregnant women and children, is abhorrent; it’s an anniversary we don’t want to happen.”

Sykes, who participated in United Nations negotiations, authored an article entitled “Thimerosal as Discrimination: Vaccine Disparity in the UN Minamata Convention on Mercury,” highlighting the use of mercury in developing nations.  The developing world is still being told to take their medicine with mercury. “The choice of a mercury-containing vaccine or no vaccine at all, is no choice at all!” she argues.

Ultimately, Sykes cautions: “In addition to stopping the damage globally, we must ask, in nearly 100 years of injecting mercury into pregnant women and children around the globe, how many lives have we negligently aborted, disabled or ended soon after their birth?”
